That option will depend on your theme, if your theme doesn’t implement the_except filter, it will not work.

Your license should work fine, recently we moved our license server from http to https, and we adjusted the license server url in our latest version, please update your copy, that will fix the license issue.
Also, please post in pro forum for pro support.
