Unfortunately, Currently there is no settings regarding this.
It needs editing core files. That is not recommended because updating plugins will remove the changes.

I am sorry the specific feature is currently not available. It may need some customization.
You must notify them about updates by any means possible.
In example our WPDM plugin uses WPDM. When update releases, user can see that from plugins page. Then they can update it from the purchase page.
Another way, We have pro membership plugin. A member only page can be created there. there will be downloads that can be accessible to only role based pro members.

Updating WPDM will not delete any downloads and data of WPDM. It will just replace the plugin files. Data and downloads are kept saved in database. So, don’t need to worry.

After changing the role from here I tried to login with dbrtest and haven’t found any problem
Additionally, I am unable to test it with new users since after creating new test users, every time I try to log into the homepage, it says “username or password not recognized.”
So please also let me know where is the users created actually?

We haven’t received any other complains about the issue you mentioned. We think unique downloads report correctly.
However, unique downloads are saved in database. It seems to work properly in our local environments. You can check more details from wp_ahm_user_download_counts
table of database. I hope it will help to remove confusions.

Allow Access feature in WPDM Pro will work based on user roles of the website.
Also we have another addon
It enables the option to select individual user to give access.
