Hope you are well. For hiding/restricting downloads files/packages to certain user roles, you can give access to those roles from your files/packages Package Settings > Allow Access section. And if you are using the PRO version of WPDM you can check this option too from When user is not allowed to download > Hide Everything option as I image attached,

If you are trying to back up the 5.x.x WPDM version, you can keep your backup in your local drive. However, for the latest compatibility, you can update your copy to the 6.3.1 version from here, https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/user-dashboard/?udb_page=purchases. please check and let me know then.

For updating the WPDM PRO main plugin, Please simply click the Save Settings again for the license key option from Downloads > Settings > License, and then please update the plugin from the wp-admin > plugins panel.
Alternatively, You can also download them from here. And you can upload and install it as a normal plugin.
