You can activate license key in a single domain at a time, but if your test site in a subdir ( domianname.de/xxx ) rather then subdomain ( xxx.domainname.de ) you can continue using same key in both installation at a time, anyhow if you still need to use subdomain, please give me the key license in a private reply whenever you need to unlock it to use it with live site.

If the remote ftp server don’t have http access, to generate thumb it will require to cache the thumbnail in native server. But if you don’t want to cache in native server, another way is using a script to read the image from remote server every time showing the thumbnail, which could add some extra load on native server processor and process could be little slower.
