4.1.7 has everything there, but I am totally confused with your issue, may you please give me temporary wp-admin login info in a private reply to check your installation.
files will not be copies to local server if you use url. when you try to download, it will be downloaded from that url, or upload files in /wp-content/uploads/download-manager-files/ dir, then url only file name in cs file.

VaultPress detect call_user_func as default security issue, however it is totally secure there as only admin have access to that function, anyhow we are still removing the function with next update to avoid confusion.

the button template is not a template tag, it is a short-code, you need to use it in post content, like wpdm_package. For button image you need to install http://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/download/wpdm-image-button/
the login info you gave was not working when I tried to login to adjust the issue, anyhow as you already adjusted the issue, don’t need that anymore 🙂
to get back all old files, go to Admin Menu Downloads Settings Migrate Tab, from there you can migrate all data from v2.6 to v2.7 . For other issue I need to check it from your installation, please give me temporary wp-admin login info in a private reply to check your issue.
