Hope you are well. Yes, it is possible to customize the frontend uploader appearance. you can browse the file/folders from wp-content\plugins\download-manager\src\AuthorDashboard\views\author-dashboard this directory and adjust it according to your requirements. If some sections get narrow or not fully viewable, you can adjust your theme style/scripts or WPDM style/scripts too from Downloads> Settings > User Interface.
And after changing any file code, you can follow this doc for making a backup that files for the next update,

Hope you are well. WPDM->settings->updates sometimes will not work with some sites for server settings. For now, For add-on updates, you can follow these steps,
1 ) Download the latest version from here https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/user-dashboard/?udb_page=purchases
2 ) Install the latest version and activate.
