first we’ve to release the update for other non-compatible add-ons, then we will back to implement new features, hopefully within next month.
updates are usually simply, but in case of wpdm pro v3 to v4, there was mejor change in code, so the update process became a bit hard, but after you moved to v4, all next updates will be smooth as you will never need to migrate data , and we are create new docs for v4 here http://newlook.wpdownloadmanager.com/docs/ , it also will be pushed to live site soon.

license will not expire ever, just update will expire after a year. but you are not allowed to use wpdm pro bypassing license.

you can do files only, not subcats, for showing subcats list with cats short-code you will need archive page add-on ( http://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/download/wpdm-directory-add-on/ )
hi, as we had major upgrade in v4 and some add-ons still are not compatible, anyhow we are already in progress with making add-ons compatible with v4, newsletter add-on will be compatible with wpdm pro within this month.
you can change the message from .po file, but if you want to change that directly, you can do that from functions.php
@joemanausa, next update we are trying to add a legacy mode, so you may wait until v4.0.5.

no conflict with w3 cache, did you migrate data using migration add-on? you upgraded from 3.3.8 to v4 or free to v4?
in v4, it is using wp_postmeta table for custom data ( meta_key: __wpdm_access )
