if you use url, then it opens or downlaods, doesn’t have control over wpdm, actually, wpdm only will redirect it.
probably your server is not supporting img functions ( like creating thumbnail ) for jpeg file. However, please open download-manager/functions.php, find and remove $vars['file_list_extended'] = wpdm_package_file_list_alt($vars);, that will resolve your problem, however we have adding exception handling for that part with next update of the plugin.

ok, the css error mostly coming from your theme and bootstrap css with wpdm, for wpdm part, you can disable bootstrap from download manager settings page.

updating plugin never deletes file, files are stored in /uploads/download-manager-files/ dir.

it will not get corrupted after update, it only happened once when it was migrating to custom post type, the will not be any change change like that in future.
