This is an extension of an earlier Topic which I closed, as this is more specific. I am just trying to work out how to make the free-text search work in a logical way with WPDM & the Verse theme.

From what I can see here the only sections of the site that this searches is Packages. I have had a look at the different templates and at the end-of-the-day I think the ‘default’ Theme search actually presents the information the best, which also means I don’t needing to customise a template. Not surprising as the Theme IS written for WPDM!

BTW I can’t see any way of linking the two searches – they seem completely discrete so very confusing if you are to use both….

Default Search (Theme Options > Search Page)

As mentioned fromn the WP Dashboard I can choose what type of Posts you want to search – I chose the standard options of Post, Pages & Downloads and an addition for Topics (which appeared after the install of a forum plugin)

GOOD – When you get a match in the Downloads section I really like the default presentation of the results.

ANNOYING – Having the choice is nice however as discussed previously the code doesn’t return results across all the Post Types – instead it picks ONE type by default (the user has no option to choose), and ONLY presents the results for that type – you have no idea if it has matched any of the others.

NOT CLEAR – to search the other types you then need to click on the ‘new’ search menu options. (although I have customised the text to try and make this clearer)

ANNOYING – a bit confusing especially as it seems to default to the Post type (I would have thought default would be Downloads) – I’m guessing because this is first type listed in the array?

VERY ANNOYING – empty search results sometimes gives just a blank page. Search for ‘the’ and then search for ‘events’…..

BAD – although I have selected ‘Page’ as a target search post type, if I type in the string ‘the’ it does not match with any of the ‘pages’ in the site, even though I know the string is used in multiple locations in the pages ‘About Us’, ‘FAQ’, etc. Instead it matches the download packages if I choose menu:post (and presents them in one way) and it also matched the download packages if I choose menu:Download and presents them in a different way.

BAD – although I have selected Topic it does not return any results for strings ‘club’ or ‘events’ which are definitely there.

Why isn’t the search matching the text strings here?

BTW if WPDM have a recommended Fourum plugin please let me know!

VERY DESIRABLE

One of the issues I am asking the WPDM team (in another Topic) is how to get the selected Categories displayed as part of the Package information. I would have expected a search for ‘Yamaha’ to match the packages in the ‘yamaha’ category but neither the default search or the shortcode page make the connection.

Currently the only way I can see how to link the packages to the search is to actually include the string as text into the package description (search ‘ducati’) AS WELL as linking it in a Category so that users can browse – which is a both a duplicitous AND a double-entry process IMHO – neither of which is good.

I have been unable to change images for separate downloads. Every single one of my downloads either has the same image for all of them, or I can remove the image completely, but I cannot figure out how to assign a different image to each download. I have tried both in the Feature Image option and the additional previews option and neither have worked.

Please advise.
