Any update on the Google Drive Add-on?

Ok, thanks. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes, I figured that much out on my own. What I have been asking — and PLEASE can I get an answer without having to ask and wait again — is what kind of timeline are we looking at? Saying it will be “some time” doesn’t mean anything. Are we talking about weeks? Months? Years? Some frame of reference is necessary for your answer to be helpful.

As I stated earlier, the Google Drive add on was one of the main features we needed in a download manager plugin, and it was a determining factor in selecting WPDM. We paid for this plugin nearly 5 months ago, and the Google Drive add on has never worked properly.

We are trying to launch a website in May, and this problem is holding us back.

Several messages back in this thread, I actually identified EXACTLY what the problem is with the way the Google Drive URLs are formatted. I realize there may be other issues, but the core problem has been identified for well over a month, and no progress is being made. I am trying to be patient, as I understand you have a lot of users asking for help with a lot of issues. But keeping your plugins operating properly should be the primary focus. When one has NEVER worked, that is a serious red flag.

Hi Shaon,

Has this been fixed yet? I seem to have the latest version (4.5.4) installed, so I’m guessing “no”. It’s been over a month. Can I get an update please? We really need this working – it’s one of the key reasons we purchased this plugin. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks!

Ok, thanks. That is good to know. I still have a couple remaining issues. The PDF is working, but not the Google-format document.

When I am entirely logged out of Google myself, and using a Chrome “incognito” window for extra assurance to replicate my end user’s experience as closely as possible, I get a 404 error on a Google-format document that is set to “Anyone with the link can view”.

I am still unclear on what to expect (will the user get a PDF of the Google doc? or will they be taken to the live document on Drive?) but clearly it should not be a 404 ๐Ÿ™‚

This is my test page: http://members.nrocnetwork.org/resources/download-package/test-gdrive/

The above applies to downloading independently, not as a zip package.

When downloading a zip package archive, I have a different problem: it unzips into a .cpgz file, which unzips into a .cpgz file, ad infinitum. I have reported this error before, and it is now affecting other multi-file packages on my site, not just the Google docs ones.

Hi Shaon,

Still doesn’t work. Before I go into any details, I absolutely need to get some questions answered about how this is intended to work. I might just be confusing things. I’ve asked these questions several times, and I have never received clear answers.

1) According to the screenshot at step 14 on http://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/download/google-drive-explorer/ , I should be able to set the permission level to “anyone with the link can view” and it will work. But you said “enable public access” (in your last message in this thread). By Google Drive standards, that’s two different things, and I need to know which one is correct.

2) Is the add-on designed to handle, IN ANY WAY, documents created in native Google format? I’m not talking about PDFs or Word docs that are uploaded to Drive. I’m talking about documents that were created in native Google formats, such as Docs, Slides, Drawings, etc. For example, will it automatically convert a native Google format file into a PDF which can be downloaded? Or will it link the user directly to a Google format document? Or will it fail? (Clearly it’s possible to link to a native Google format file, but I’m trying to determine what the expected outcome is when a user tries to download it.)

Hi Shaon, any progress on this issue?

kalico

Ok Shaon… 2 steps forward, 1 step back…. ๐Ÿ˜›

So here’s what I did:

1) back up v4.5.3
2) delete 4.5.3 and reinstall manually
3) activate
4) go to Downloads Settings Updates and click the green button: Success!
5) check a few existing items and all are good

This means that the patch for whitespace prevention is working, and so are my paid customizations – That’s 2 steps forward. ๐Ÿ™‚

So now to test the Google Drive situation at http://members.nrocnetwork.org/resources/download/canvas-english-test/

1) test the one PDF that was already in there from Google Drive.
1.a) download JUST the one file — It works. I can download and open it.
1.b) use the big download button for the zip file — the file has the right name (e.g., PAGETITLE.zip), but it unpacks to something with a .zip.cpgz extension, which is just some other kind of compressed file, which opens to create another compressed file, etc….so that’s a fail.

Maybe because there’s only one file?

2) add a second file to this package (from Drive) — this one is a Google Doc, not a PDF. (Why am I trying this? Because I still don’t know from all the descriptions I’ve read, whether this plugin can handle a g-docs formatted file, or if it only works with things like PDF and Word docs. Can you please tell me? If it won’t, I will stop testing that. Thx)
2.a) each one now gives the file_not_found.txt when I try to download it, so even the PDF isn’t working anymore.
2.b) same problem with the zip’d archive: it downloads as a .zip, which unpacks to a .zip.cpgz, which unpacks to a .zip.cpgz, etc.

So I figure, let’s scrap everything and try again. Delete all files I’ve tested with, and click “update”.

3) Select 3 files from Drive: 2 PDFs and 1 MS Word.
3.a) each one individually gives the file_not_found.txt when I try to download.
3.b) the archive downloads as a .zip, which unpacks to a .zip.cpgz, which unpacks to a .zip.cpgz, etc.

One last-ditch effort: I thought maybe the files I’m trying to upload aren’t “public” enough. So I uploaded a test PDF to drive and made sure it was public. Same exact issues as above.

So basically, I am STILL unable to use the Google Drive add-on. We’re getting close to launch and I’m getting worried. ๐Ÿ™

Aside from just getting it to work, I have two hanging questions:

1) Is this addon designed to handle Google Docs formatted items (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc), or just uploaded items (PDF, PPT, Word, Excel, etc)?
2) Does the item have to be fully “public” (“anyone on the web can find and access”) or can it be semi-public (“anyone with the link can view”)?

Thanks in advance. I know you’ve got a lot going on here and I appreciate your help.

@Eltonbean and @Denis-Bih: I am asking Shaon about how updates might affect very specific, paid, custom work done for me by HIS STAFF at WPDM. This thread is not about customizations I have made to templates. I suggest you ask your questions in a separate thread to get appropriate answers for your specific issues. ๐Ÿ™‚

I still have this problem with Google Drive, and I can’t update my WPDM (which will allegedly fix it) without getting confirmation that the whitespace issue is fixed in 4.5.4. Please advise. Thanks.

kalico

Hi Shaon,

Thanks, but that isn’t actually what I was referring to; I’m sorry I wasn’t clear.

I need to know if the 4.5.4 update contains the fix for whitespace problems that you temporarily fixed on my site (per this thread).

In January, when I applied the customized version of the plugin, it overwrote the temporary fixes you had made to my site. I can’t afford for that to happen again, so I don’t want to apply any updates until you confirm that the latest version (4.5.4) does indeed contain the fix for the whitespace issue I originally had.

Thank you!

Hi Shaon,

I see there is a new update to WPDM (4.5.4). Were the problems with whitespace fixed per this thread? Is it safe to update?

That’s great news! Will you support Vimeo as well?

Vimeo has become very important to us as a professional organization, because we can avoid all the junky videos that are displayed by YouTube.

Looks like a browser issue. I tested in Firefox, and yes…it played (was using Chrome before). So now I have to overcome the apparent browser limitations….hopefully I can find a compatible plugin where someone thought all that through!

The other challenge remains: showing our embedded Vimeo videos in the same format. Attachment shows what I get (in both FF and Chrome).

Hi Shaon,

I had some custom work done by your team, and it broke whatever you did to fix the the whitespace issue on my site. I realize you’re planning to release this fix in the next update, but meanwhile, my downloads are completely broken (and I have not heard back from the customization team about the issue). We are about to go to an alpha testing phase with the site, so I really need those downloads working asap. Anything you can tell me about how to fix it, or ?? Thanks.
