in reply to: "Attach Dir" option not working after latest update #40693

Hi,
Thank you very much. the problem is now solved.

However, i just noticed that when i try to add a new file using “Browse”, I get a big column blocking the view.
“Upload” and “URL” are fine. browse is the only one that has this.

IS this a javascript problem?
I turned off other plugins, but still got the same issue. I used “browse” successfully hundreds of times before. not sure why this isi happening.
Can you please help?
I attached a screenshot to demonstrate.
thanks a lot

Hi,
thanks for the reply. The file sizes for the attach dir packages still show 0.00kb.
can you please advise which packages you saw the file size working?

I even edited some packages and re-saved them, still 0.00kb.

Hello,

I updated the plugin to the ates 4.4 version.

the package size from “attach dir” still showed 0.00kb. I edited the packages and removed the written zide “0.00kb”, then saved the packages and opened it again in the browser, still showed “0.00kb”.

I re-pointed the packages towards the directory and saved again, but still gives 0.00kb.

plz check:

in reply to: Dynamic Zip File for download packages #34391

Hi,

however it can be deleted after user complete download”

can this be deleted automatically or I have to delete them manually?

Also, I enabled “caching the zip files” option. however, when i refresh the “download-manager-files” folder, i find that the “date modified” of the zip file changes its time after each time I download the zip file. (also it takes long time to start downloading, as it is 229MB).

Isn’t it supposed to be cached, so it does not change?

Hi,

I am still awaiting your response. Thanks!

Hi,

Can this be due to Facebook bot? these spikes happen when i share the posts containing these download links on facebook and twitter, nd my posts get shared.

can this be the cause?

will the hotlinking extension fix this? or i need other steps?

cheers

in reply to: Number of downloads massively larger than page visits #34321

Hi,

Can you please be patient and explain how are the bot visits considered hotlinking?

My problem is not users stealing my content!!

Also, if i bought and installed the hotlinking prevention extension, will this prevent me from linking to the files? I have a PDF reader flipbook that i feed the pdfs paths to it so people can read the pdf online.

and also use the worpdress audio shortcode to play some files. will the extension stop this?

Please find attached a screenshot of the hits activity on 1 link that WPDM is saying that it was downloaded 32,075 times, while the page was visited only 972 times.

clearly there are bots activities as the link was visited in one day 45,000 times and in another day 25,000 times. this can’t be legit users.

Awaiting your help.

cheers

Hi Shaon,

Thanks for the explanation. so it is most definitely bots, as my users won’t have the experience at all to read headers and extract links.

That being said, does the block hotlink functionality stop bots from accessing the download link the way you explained? or some other measures are required?

cheers,

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

Can you please explain how a normal visitor obtain the direct link?

here is a simple post with a download button:

http://coptic-treasures.com/wp/cac-001/

the page is visited 821 times and the package is downloaded 4618 times.

can you please explain the steps to get the link? (taking into account that users are not expert in wordpress+wpdm)

Moreover, I am on a dedicated server and have bandwidth monitors. when a link for a pdf that is 73MB is visited 20,000 times in one night, I would expect a spike in the bandwidth, which did not happen.

Can you please comment on these 2 points? as i am definite it is not genuine downloads. buying an extension to restore a normal functionality seems unfair, espcially that i am definite that there is no hotlinking that is happening on all my links at the same time.

cheers,

Moreover, sometimes this spike happen the same day that the post is published. no other website are waiting at my door to copy my files!!

AN important thing to note is that this happens to the files that are become famous on Facebook. So when i publish a post and people share it a lot, this problem happens.

do you think that facebook can access the link in the form

http://mywebsite.com/post-name/?wpdmdl=package-number?

so that my post itself is not visited, but this link is clicked somehow?

cheers,

Hi Shaon,

Thanks for the reply.  I did not understand from your reply how can a link in this form be accessed manually while it is not present anywhere on my website:

http://coptic-treasures.com/wp/download/%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%83%D8%AA%D8%A8-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%B5%D8%A9-%D8%A8%D9%85%D8%A4%D9%84%D9%81-%D9%85%D8%B4%D9%87%D9%88%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D9%86%D8%A8%D8%A7/?wpdmdl=21511

what i show on my website is the link button,, and even hide the packages.

How can someone get the link in the form shown above, and even get the links for tens of files.

Can you please explain how a person gets the link in this form?

the link has the post name and download package number. how will a visitor know what package is in what page so he can manipulate the links?

cheers,

in reply to: Number of downloads massively larger than page visits #34019

Hi,

I discovered how bots access the files. I checked the logs of the WP Statistics plugin, and found that all the suspicious files have massive link visits.

the link was visited 46,896 times, although the page itself was visited like 200 times only.

http://coptic-treasures.com/wp/download/%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%83%D8%AA%D8%A8-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AE%D8%A7%D8%B5%D8%A9-%D8%A8%D9%85%D8%A4%D9%84%D9%81-%D9%85%D8%B4%D9%87%D9%88%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D9%86%D8%A8%D8%A7/?wpdmdl=21511

there is no where on my website that i lik the files using the method above, as i did not even know this linking system.

can you please explain how this is happening? i am not saying that this is definitely bot activities, but having 4 stats sources that align in numbers makes the problem in WP Dpwnload manager.

Awaiting your help.

Cheers.

Hi,

Thank you very much for this clarification. Are there any disadvantages for removing the .htaccess file and allowing direct linking? Will bots access the files more, or it is dont to prevent other websites from linking to the files?

cheers,
