This is not good!
So you can’t turn on and off by post you can only do globally for all content?
Why can you not edit the files list code using the page template then you could turn on and off for all content using that template rather than globally?

I couldn’t be bothered with all that hassle so I purchased a plugin called:
WordPress Restricted Site Access: Plugin for Content Control by creativeminds

It handles content restriction very well and provides lots of ways to restrict content individually and on mass by custom post type and even url filtering which was perfect for my use case.

Sorry but your answer only says problems (file permission and file size issues) it doesn’t mention a solution and your attached image doesn’t work???
The files are accessible when using http to access directly, please can you be more helpful in your comments as in what I need to do to make WPDM work?
