Not exactly sure how this could be related with wpdm, however if you want login form, wpdm has a short-code for that. Please use short-code [wpdm_login_form]

wpdm_direct_link is only usable for public downloads. For protected files, you have to use short-code [wpdm_package id='ID'], But if you want a direction, there will require custom coming, an action hook for that will be available from next update.

Actually using older version will not be safe, also php v5.2 is too old to use actually and has lots of security vulnerability. Your server admin will able to change your server to php v5.3 or upper just in mins.

About the demo:
Shaon already mentioned in previous post, like most other software, you can keep it as free download and users can use it for 30 days without applying license, after 30 days, demo period is expired and ask for license key and without license key user will not be able to download it, however your programmer should understand it easily.
