If you were talking about the search option with theme, it will depend on your theme, wpdm has nothing to do with that. However, for wpdm’s custom search feature, you may use this add-on http://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/download/wpdm-directory-add-on/

For that you need to customize code and not too short to explain here, however if you want customization, please mail to customize@wpdownloadmanager.com

Shaon already mentioned in previous post, like most other software, you can keep it as free download and users can use it for 30 days without applying license, after 30 days, demo period is expired and ask for license key and without license key user will not be able to download it, however your programmer should understand it easily.
