When clicking download button new page appears with gibberish

When I click on the download button a new page appears instead of the download and the whole page is filled with a weird code of diamonds and boxes. I am using 3.5.1 wordpress if this is relevant at all. I have a password on these files if this is causing the problem? Please help!
