HI there.
My first post. So far loving this package, it seems to be able to do exacltly what I need.

I do the website for a small car club http://www.sunbeamcarclubofnewzealand.org.nz
We want our members to be able to login to our WordPress site, and download (for example) newsletters or our constitution etc – files that are only available if you have a valid login.
We also have an Executive and I want to lock down some files e.g. meeting minutes so only they have access.
I have three issues that i can’t seem to resolve, no matter what i do or how much I search in your forums.

1: I can’t change the way the files look.
I only want to upload files like docx, pdf, xlsx. But no matter what i do, when I’m logged in I simply get a page of file names – no pretty icons, no preview, no sizes, just something like this:

Category: Member Documents
Highlights August 2016
Exec AGM 2020
Weekend Programme – template (2020)
AGM Registration Form – Template (2019 AGM)
June 19 Exec meeting

If I go into each document and change the page template setting to something else, it makes no differnce. If I add a tag of say page-template-doc-preview it makes no difference. I get the same thing every time.
How do I change the way files are displayed?

2: I have setup categories, with a main one called Member Documents and sub categories under that.
No matter what I do, I get the above result re display of files – no sub categories shown etc. I should be able to see each categoiry (eg exec minutes, newsletters) and then drill down to see the relevant files?
One of the screen dumps for the product I saw had a Windows Explorer interface look to it, so you can easily move through folders. I’d love to do this, but no idea how.
You can see above in (1) that all my files are simply showing under Member Documents.

3: Permissions don’t seem to do anything.
I have applied permissions to (for example) the Exec Minutes category, and then saved a file in that category. But if I login as a Subscriber test account, I can still see the files – even though I haven’t given Subscriber any access to that category. This is possibly because I have one main category called Member Documents, and then have all other categories under that? This is the tidiest way to display a link on our menu, which is why I’ve done it this way. Surely that should work?
I’ve tried adding permissions to the category, and even teh file itself under ‘Allow Access’ but the Subscriber can always see all files.

I’d appreciate it if I could get this working. It’s a great product that driving me a little crazy right now 🙂

Cheers
Fred

Hi,

For #1 it should work, if you are using Pro WPDM, you have also access for creating page templates/ link templates and there also the preview button.
and For #2 and #3 subcategories and Allow Access also should work. if possible, Please, give your temporary wp-admin login details in a private reply for checking.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have checked from your site, the templates working fine. If you want to see the preview of templates you can check them from Downloads > Templates and the preview button. and if you want to edit or adjust with new code, you can follow this doc, https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/doc/template-files/, by default, you are usinglink-template-default.php for link template and page-template-default.php for the page template. As documentation, you have to copy the file in the theme directory naming a folder called download-manager, then paste it in tpls>page-templates for page templateor tpls>link-templates for link template. or if you want to create from the admin panel you can use the PRO version. you will find templates available tags here, https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/doc/templates/template-tags/

and for showing package related categories you can use this tag in your template[categories]. it is also available here, https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/doc/templates/template-tags/

and for third when you have given allow access to the subscriber as an administrator you can see the download button, but if you check the file/package from the incognito mode it is not showing there. please check and let me know.

Thanks.

Hi Nayeem
Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
You said “I have checked from your site, the templates working fine.” I’m not seeing any templates at all, or do you mean they are setup but you can’t see them from the front end?

I’m totally confused though. I tried to follow https://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/doc/template-files/. Do i need to do steps 1 and 2?
I did step 3 i and ii, but then got to
“Now remove all files from {active-theme}/download-mamager except the ones you need to modify
Update template file(s) in {active-theme}/download-manager dir as per your need”
Are the ones I need to modify the two files you mention above?
If I copy the tpls folder into my active theme, the files are already there – there’s no need to copy them? Where am I pasting them from?

I’ll try out the categories link you posted, and I’ll test out the sub and admin info you’ve given above.
Thanks again – it does look like a great product, and I’m sure it will be once i can get it going..
Cheers
Fred

Hi again Nayeem
Ok, some progress re permissions. I was hoping to not have the files that can’t be downloaded visible at all, but it seems all files are visible, but only available for download if you have permissions. Is there not a way to hide them completely if the logged in user does not have permissions to view? That would tidy it up no end.

Re thee categories tags, I see where you’re going with that, but again, I’m confused. In WordPress under Downloads, there’s a Categories option, and I’ve added my categories to this, and layered them. then I’ve added permissions so that only certain people can see certain categories. Then I applied the required category to each document. But everything shows up, with just the one main category and no layering. It would seem simply to use teh Categories in WordPress since it’s already there, but are you saying that that doesn’t work, and i have to use tags?

Hi,

I have tested creating package/file from your site. https://www.sunbeamcarclubofnewzealand.org.nz/download/wpdm-sub-test/, https://www.sunbeamcarclubofnewzealand.org.nz/download/wpdm-test/.

Because you have copied the page templates or link templates from the plugin folder, customized them as per your need and when plugin will be updated the templates will be not lost. i hope you have understood.

Thanks.

And for the query, when a user is not allowed to download(Hide Everything) the option is available in the pro version. you can check that.

Thanks.

The preview of that package is exactly what I want, but I have no idea how to apply this to all documents. I do not understand your second sentence. I can move whatever needs to be moved to make it work, but I’m lost on what I actually have to do.

Hi,

If you have to make custom templates. then when the plugin will be updated and then you need/want to update it. but after updating the plugin the templates may be lost. for safety purposes, you can follow/copy in your theme folder the templates for the permanent solution.

Thanks.

Ok i made some progress. I have to apply a page template to every file to get it to show up in the view I want, e.g. a graphical downlod button so the page looks nicer than straight text.
But I’m still stuck on the whole categories thing – not hiding files that should be hidden, but how to make the categories appear like a folder tree (e.g. Windows Explorer) as it does in a screen dump on your website?

Thanks Nayeem re custom templates – I don’t want to make any custom templates, I simply want a nice view of the files, like you have on your website. Nothing customised, but something other than straight text. I think I might have that now (as per my message above).
But keen to get categories sorted, and permissions, although I sort of have that figured out now (I think).
There are still some files I shouldn’t see as a Subscriber but I can, and others I can’t see but I should be able to. Do I apply permissions to every file, or can I not apply them to a category, and then any files under that category automatically have the permissions applied?
