@peterdayton I found a workaround by creating custom fields and using a custom search plugin that searches downloads including the additional field attached to them. If & How it works will depend on your individual setup and whether the tags are pre-existing, mine was a new site so I was able to replace tags with the custom fields without having to copy anything.

Using [wpdm-tags] would be great if it was possible to select more than one tag at a time. Is there any way this could be done? My client wanted people to be able to select multiple tags to filter results.
