I see that Download Manager Pro v4.5.6 was recently released. Does anyone know if this version will FINALLY support doing normal WordPress plugin updates?

This issue seems to be of little to no interest to the developer based on the almost complete lack of communication. At this point, I am interested in alternatives. Can anyone suggest alternative plugins that they have had good success with for managing a downloadable files area in WordPress?

It has been QUITE awhile since a normal update method was requested for this plugin and so far very little information has been provided about it and apparently no action has been taken? WPDM appears to still be something that is developed (it hasn’t been abandoned, from what I can see), but why there is no action and no information about the updating process boggles my mind?

I would agree with this whole thread and especially with the last comment. Could someone at least confirm that the ability to update WPDM like any other WP plugin is at least on the list of planned ‘fixes’?

I would agree with others in this thread. The lack of a standard WordPress plugin update process is frustrating. Will this ever be fixed? If so, when?

I would agree with others here. The update process for all WPDM and related plugins is confusing and cumbersome. From what I remember when asking this question before, there is intent to bring the WPDM plugins up to current standards and provide simple one-click updates like almost all other WordPress plugins. It was stated that this should be occurring soon, but it has been quite awhile since I last asked about this.

Is there any timeframe on when this might occur? I see updates come out regularly, which is good, but every update reminds me of the cumbersome process currently in place.

Thanks for all of your hard work. A status update on this situation would be helpful.

“…but we are implementing auto update feature soon.”

Any status on when WPDM will have the ‘auto-update’ feature implemented?

Got it. I’ll be watching for the auto-update feature, that seems the norm for 98% of the WP plugins I’ve ever installed. If the WPDM plugins are not updated normally, what is the method? I understand I need to download the new version. Do I then just install it as if the existing plugin wasn’t there? Will it keep all of my configuration settings? Do I have to manually deactivate or reactivate anything during the process? Is there a page on the WPDM site that explains any of this? The link in my WP site just goes to the purchase page.

Thanks Shaon. Disabling ‘Bootstrap JS’ in settings did indeed fix the drop-down menu for subcategories. I will look into creating a new link template for the display issue. That only leaves one issue unanswered.

– (UNANSWERED/UNRESOLVED) Parameters: Category: I had set this to only show the ‘Logo’ category. As you can see, it is showing ALL Categories.
– (ANSWERED/RESOLVED) SubCategories: I see there is a pull-down arrow… A: Disabling Bootstrap JS fixed this.
– (ANSWERED) Columns: Is there any way to dictate the number of columns used… A: Look into creating new link template to address this.
– (ANSWERED) Item Display: Listing of the items sometimes leaves a big gap… A: Look into creating a new link template to address this.

Could you let me know how to resolve the first item about ‘Parameters for the Category’? Thanks!

Thanks Shaon. I just checked it again too. I forgot that I had left the page with the default short code example from the ‘purchase’ page. I went in and changed the page to be more similar to what we would use. (Following is the current short code)

`[wpdm-archive category=”-1″ button_style=”danger” link_template=”link-template-calltoaction1″ order_by=”post_title” order=”asc” items_per_page=”10″]

I also attached a screenshot of what I’m seeing (Firefox 37.0.1, MacOSX 10.9.5).

I was able to verify that the following ARE working.
– Parameters: Button Color, Sort Order, Asc/Dsc

However, the following appear to NOT be working.
– Parameters: Category: I had set this to only show the ‘Logo’ category. As you can see, it is showing ALL Categories.
– SubCategories: I see there is a pull-down arrow on the ‘Marketing’ button, which is correct, but the arrow doesn’t do anything? How do you show SubCategories?
– Columns: Is there any way to dictate the number of columns used? The Category buttons use 3-column, but the actual items don’t seem to follow the buttons – they only use 2-column.
– Item Display: For some reason the listing of the items sometimes leaves a big gap?

Could you please let me know how I can resolve these issues? Thanks!

Thanks for the clarification Shaon. If that is the case then it seems that ‘Bulk Import > Import Selected Files’ feature is not working properly. The following are the results that I get.

– Uploaded files via FTP to a folder other than ‘download-manager-files’.
– Added the files to WPDM via the ‘Bulk Import > Import Selected Files’ tool.
– The added files did NOT get moved from the upload folder to the ‘download-manager-files’.
– The added files DID show up in ‘Downloads > All Packages’ with the correct ‘file format icon’ (except PNG files) and Categories assigned to the files, however…
– The added files show an error (file-not-found.txt) when a user attempts to download them, because the ‘new’ file path shows the files were moved to ‘download-manager-files’, but the files were not actually moved.

Any ideas on how to correct this issue? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I’m a bit confused. My initial statement was…
When I started using WPDM, FTP uploading image files to a folder other than the default ‘download-manager-files’ and then using the ‘Bulk Import’ tool to ‘Import Selected Files’, would automatically copy those files to the ‘download-manager-files’ folder and have the proper file format icon linked to them.

Your response was…
You will not have to copy files manually to download-mamager-files dir except there are some dir write permission issue in your server.

I might have mistakenly taken that to mean that what I was proposing, and what I had success with before (use ‘Import Selected Files’ to move files from an initial upload folder to the final folder), was what you were saying should be standard functionality. In fact, what you might have been referring to was the ability to FTP upload files directly into ‘download-manager-files’. To be clear, I DO have that ability. The reason I chose to upload files to a different folder first was because it was difficult/time consuming to scroll through a huge list of files in the ‘download-manager-files’ folder to find the ‘new’ ones to select for ‘Import Selected Files’.

Maybe what you are saying is that the normal procedure should involve using the CSV for the import process. Is there any place that talks in more detail about the CSV import file? After looking at it several times, I’m unclear about what I should be placing in the different fields/columns.

Thanks for your help.

If you think that wp-admin access would still be helpful, let me know and I will ‘private reply’ those credentials.

I’m back on this project again.

I set both the ‘wp-content/plugins/download-manager’ AND ‘wp-content/plugins/download-manager/cache’ folders to 777 and did another test upload but the results are the same. It did not fix the issue. My process is this.

– Upload files via FTP to a folder other than ‘download-manager-files’.
– Add the files to WPDM via the ‘Bulk Import’ tool.
– The added files did NOT get moved from the upload folder to the ‘download-manager-files’.
– The added files DID show up in ‘Downloads > All Packages’ with the correct ‘file format icon’ (except PNG files) and Categories assigned to the files.
– The added files show an error (file-not-found.txt) when a user attempts to download them.

What do I need to do to fix this? Thanks for your help.

Sorry for continuing to add posts.

My goal is to allow the following.
– Upload files via FTP to a folder other than ‘download-manager-files’.
– Add the files to WPDM via the ‘Bulk Import’ tool.
– Have the ‘added’ files moved from the upload folder to the ‘download-manager-files’.
– Have the correct ‘file format icon’ assigned to the files.

I’m looking for help to get this to work properly. If the folder permissions need to be 644, I’ll change them if I can (it appears, 744 is as close as I can get?). If 755 is fine, then I would like suggestions on what else might get this working again.

Thanks for your help. It is greatly appreciated.

Actually, as I was looking at it again, 644 is more restrictive than 755. Would 755 work?

Thanks for the details Shaon. I have set the /download-manager-files folder to 644 (was set to 755). When you say make the /download-manager/cache folder ‘writable’, do you mean that should also be set to 644? Currently its set to 755.

How might I go about fixing the dir write permission issue on the server? What should the permissions be on the download-manager-files directory?

We are hosting with Bluehost.com. WordPress was installed manually on their server. Genesis framework was installed on top of that. Is there anything in the default installs that would have restricted the write permissions? Is there anything I could have inadvertently changed?

I just noticed that one of the main questions in this thread (because it is a problem instead of a feature request) wasn’t answered.

At some point after installing a WPDM add-on, that functionality changed. Now when I do that same process, the file format icon gets linked, but the files do not get copied to ‘download-manager-files’ which results in the download link breaking. If I manually move the files into the ‘download-manager-files’ folder via FTP, the download link is fixed, but then the icon link is broken and I have to manually reassign the icon.

Is this ‘normal’ behavior? Is there anything I can do to get the original functionality back (automatically moving files to the proper folder and icon linking them)?

Thanks for the thorough explanation Shaon, that helped a lot! I’m glad I asked. Thanks also about the tip regarding the Archive page, that might actually help solve the issue.

Out of curiosity, is this forum run on a WordPress plugin? If so, do you mind sharing what plugin is used? BBpress?

Thanks for the response Tauhid. If the breadcrumbs being broken has nothing to do with WPDM, then why are they only broken on the WPDM package pages? Every where else on the website they work fine. When I look at the page source on the Package pages, it seems like the problem is that the URL path has changed from ‘/downloads’ on the ‘all-packages’ page to /download/… on the Package page. Not being a programmer, that would seem to point to how WPDM is crafting the URL’s differently between the ‘all-packages’ and Package pages.
