We did try that, but it resulted in the categories marked for ‘Guest’ access no longer being visible when not logged in. As an example, we have some sub categories that are available to both guests and logged in members (identified by a role given to them at registration) while others are accessible to members only. Additionally, some documents within a members only category will be further restricted to only being accessible to various sub-groups of users, as identified by additional roles.
