I would really like to see a subscribe to download feature added for free items, but have them added to my mail list.

subscriber to download option already have with pro, additionally, we have add-on for campaign monitor, mailchimp, i-contact, constant contact to add those email directly with subscriber list http://www.wpdownloadmanager.com/downloads/email-add-ons/
