Order Category List By Custom Field

I have seen this question asked before but I have not seen any answers that could help make this possible. I have gone through the code and found that you can order by download count through the admin list page but it was commented out as an option to order on the front end, I would imagine the a custom field would work the same way as this. Can you guide me to were i need to be looking to add this feature.
