How to update from 3.3.8?

We’re running Download Manager 3.3.8 and would like to update to the current version. Since there doesn’t appear to be a way to do this automatically from the WordPress dashboard, we tried a simple install of the current version and of course that failed … “plugin directory already exists”. Do we have to uninstall the current version to complete the update? If so, what happens to our download docs and download page formatting?
