How to show count of files in specific category

I am using the following shortcode to display files within a category:

[wpdm_category id="staff-vacancies" toolbar="0"]

I would like to return the number of files in the category, either within the table, or better still by using a function so that I can insert text like “There are currently no vacancies” or “There are currently 3 vacancies”.

Is this possible with either free or pro version?

There is a shortcode in for that, but only available with the pro version.
