in free version there is no template editing in the backend, i would like to ask if i created my own template design, how i can use it, or if i edited an existing template, will it be gone when the plugin updates..

You just need to follow this:
1. Copy page-templates directory from /plugins/download-manager/src/package/views directory to your active theme directory.
2. Make a new directory as download-manager on your active theme directory.
3. Now remove all files from {active-theme}/download-manager/page-templates except the template files you need to update.
4. Update template file(s) in {active-theme}/download-manager/page-templates directory as per your need.
However, wpdm update will not cause any issue with this directory. But if you update the theme, the directory will be removed. In this case, I would suggest to use child theme.

after i made the folder and created the template i need, i left the template name as it is but when i used the template it was the same old one, is there anything i am missing?
You just use a template and edit there.
In example:
If you copy page-template-1col-flat.php to the directory, then you just select page template as Single Column, Flat then if you edit or remove any template tags in it, you will see the effect.

did not work for me i already changed alot in the template but the changes didn’t show up:
I added page-template-1col-flat.php to {active-theme}/download-manager/page-templates and made the changes to the template, and i used Single Column, Flat and nothing happened same old template

Got the issue.
In the theme directory you made the smallest typing mistake.
You wrote download-mamager instead of download-manager
I have fixed that and found it is okay now.
