I have a client that I am upgrading from a very old version of WP and they used a very old plugin that allowed users with a certain User Role to download files.

It looked to me as if Download Manager would give them the functionality they needed. However, when I go to configure File Browser Access, it only shows me “Administrator”, “Editor”, “Contributor”, and “Author”.

Is there a way to get it to accept the client’s Custom User Role?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t.

The client has several Custom User Roles defined, but the important one for his plugin is “Secure” which is just a Subscriber with a special capability that should allow them to download the secure files protected by Download Manager.

Every place in the WordPress back-end that displays User Roles will display “Aministrator”, “Editor”, “Contributor”, “Author”, “Subscriber”, and “Secure”. However, in the File Browser Access dropdown, it only displays the standard WordPress roles. It does not display “Secure”.

Is there a way to get Download Manager to accept “Secure”?

sorry, in free version, you only can set file browser access for the roles those have “edit_posts” capability. So, if you want to allow role “Secure” to file browser access, first you need to add “edit post” capability for that role.
