Is the pro version paid annually?

I’m thinking about going from the free version to the pro version, but I have a question as to whether the download is a one-time payment or if it’s a subscription that you have to pay every year to have the pro version.

Yes, it is a subscription that you have to pay yearly. Upgrades are provided for a term of 1 year from the time of purchase. After 1 year a new license will need to be purchased in order to continue receiving support and product upgrades.
