/mnt/downs works for downloads, not uploads

Hello – I have a site that has used Download Manager for years to deliver free video test materials which are often gigabytes in size – I use the free Download Manager since my needs are easily filled by that.

I haven’t had to upload anything for a while, but now when I do click on “Select from Server” it sends me to a popup named “Server File Picker BETA” – but that only allows up to the public_html directory. DM has always allowed and I have always used a /downloads directory in the /mnt directory on my server.

Downloads from the /mnt directory still work fine! I just can’t put a new file in there and direct DM to it.

Did the software change? …adding that limit or is my Beta version of File Picker not updated or am I not seeing something else that allows DM to use the /mnt directory. I would really rather the downloads be off the var/www site since I don’t want to have those huge files to back up when backing up the site. (As it is now, any new file dragged into the “Drop Files Here” goes to /wp-content/uploads/download-manager-files.

Thank you.

Hello Int Marine,

I have checked your mnt/ directory. I think it is residing in the root directory. According to the settings for now, it should in the public_html directory. I hope you have understood now. Please let me know

Thank you and regards

As you say Nayeem, indeed, the /mnt folder is at the root directory, which is standard for unix systems. I have successfully kept my DM files there for many many years. It was an allowed place in the DM Settings tab. …perhaps even suggested – when I set up DM many years ago I wouldn’t have known about /mnt

DM is successfully downloading my current files in the /mnt/down__ directory. This is not magic, this is the way that DM used to be.

But New DM Documents won’t route to there. The Settings will not allow it anymore.

For me, this is a problem. My Download files are several GBytes large. If they are in the public_html directory, the backup files would be too huge to handle and take too long to create. The files are also more safe there. It has never happened, but if someone did break into my public_html directory, they (hopefully) cannot go up to root.

The important thing is that this access issue has been changed in DM. Did this change with the “Server File Picker BETA”? Can I go back to the way it was before?

Thank you,
Int Marine

Hello Nayeem –

thank you for the link. I will try a few of the old versions, but I hope they are still safe.

1) If your team mates tell you when they stopped supporting /mnt on the same server as the /var/www, please let me know.

2) Can you find out where in the code I could change the directory, since the GUI makes it impossible? Is it in the php or in the database?

3) And, is there a place that I can record a request for this attribute to be included in further revisions?

Hello Nayeem
3.2.50 includes the ability to route to my servers /mnt directory
3.2.60 removes the ability to route to my servers /mnt directory
3.2.70 continues this problem

Please ask whether and when this facility can be brought back – the idea of running old software in these times of bots checking for any security flaw…well, it isn’t good policy.

Thank you,
InternetMarine

Hello again.

I continue to use the out of date version, and install new versions by hand with hope that they engineers will return what was working.

I reported last time that 3.2.50 allows for /mnt directories. Now I can tell you that 3.2.51 also works, but 3.2.55 does not. They took away a feature – by mistake???

I appreciate that you are looking into this – it is not safe running older versions.

Thank you – Internet Marine.

3.2.53 is the last version that allows the internal /mnt directory to be the storage for the download files.

3.2.54 ended that feature.

What was this trying to solve? Please revert this capability – it allows security, it allows separate and convenient backup without bulging the wordpress space.

I cannot run the current versions – what bug fixes have been made such that I am running potentially risky software?

Thank you.
