The document preview shortcode is only loading documents some of the time. The iframe loads with an empty <body> tag. It does not matter what format the document is either and there is no obvious pattern to predicting when it will or will not load.

The pdf previewer addon is only useful if you only want to preview pdfs. It would be great if the reliability of previewing all document types could be improved.
