Thank you !
I’m back with this question…
So, after the discussion above, I decided to just block thumbnail generation when I upload my images. But this doesn’t work really well and I still have to go and manually erase all the thumbnails generated by my theme.
In the meantime I also got in touch with another plugin that does media file protection and they do include the image thumbnails in their protection. So I guess it would be possible for you to do the same… For a number of reasons, I’d rather stick with WPDM than find another plugins combo. Is this something you could implement ? Either through a custom request or within the core plugin ?
Thanks
With that add-on, do the customers have to subscribe to the “update notification” in order to get them, or is that done automatically (they don’t have a choice)?
Hi Shahjada,
I completely understand, but wanted to let you know that this is an issue that can potentially affect all websites that sell in the EU… So not just 1 of your customers. You might consider adding this feature to your plugin to be GDPR compliant.
GDPR is a pain in the ass, but it’s there for a reason.
This is not linked to an add-on but to the general way to let clients to subscribe to newsletter. I’m using mailchimp (so the mailchimp add-on), but this is valuable information for any e-mail management add-on…
The way WPDM works the website owner decides to subscribe all customers or no one by default. I decide this in the settings :
With this way of doing things, the customer cannot choose to be subscribed. There is no checkbox that he can check to say he wants the newsletter or not.
This is against GDPR law in Europe.
To be GDPR compliant, there should be a checkbox that the customer can check / uncheck during the checkout process.
Like in this example :
If the customer cannot choose whether he wants to get the newsletter, it’s not GDPR compliant and I risk getting fined for it…
This is just for regular paid downloads in my case. Of course, this is not for email locked downloads, as the client is aware that he has to subscribe in order to get the download.
Hope it’s easier to understand this way.
After checking this with other people and plugins, it looks like to comply with GDPR you really have to put a checkbox during checkout.
You’d have the box where the client enters his email address and just below a checkbox saying “Subscribe to newsletter”.
For GDPR, the checkbox can’t be already checked but that’s an option other plugins allow to choose.
The way things are now with WPML, I could be in trouble because you don’t allow me to let the client choose.
I’m using double opt-in, but it looks like I still could be fined for automatically subscribing customers to my list…
Great! Thanks a lot !
Thanks, but it doesn’t help.
I don’t mind getting the emails as admin. It’s the customer emails that I want to deactivate.
Thanks for your suggestions but these don’t do what I would like.
I guess it would be more linked to the mailchimp add-on (or similar providers).
As things are right now I can automatically add every customer to my mailing list, which is nice… But they don’t have the option to choose not to be added to the list.
I’m in Europe, with RGPD regulations, so this is probably why I’m expecting this to be possible.
Your plugin does great things but for smaller details and fine-tuning like this it can get frustrating.
Thank youy !
Still waiting for a reply on this issue please !
I got this response from Paypal, looks like the problem is WPDM sends an amount of 0 and Paypal doesn’t like it
I tested the checkout flow and was able to confirm both scenarios that you explained. If WordPress passes a 0 amount to PayPal, then it is expected that the payer will encounter the screen below:
Image_2020-08-27_12-11-50.png
This is because PayPal does not have a valid amount to work with (0 is not a valid amount, which WordPress would have passed to PayPal) so it prompts the buyer for what the amount should be.
If WordPress passes an amount greater than 0 to PayPal, then they will not encounter the above screen, and checkout will continue as normal. We’d recommend that you do not allow for WordPress to trigger the PayPal checkout process with an amount of 0 and to not have a coupon code in WordPress that discounts the amount by 100%
Wonderful! That’s what I was looking for. Thank you!
Yes, that’s what I’m looking for… BUT for users who purchased the products BEFORE I used WPDM. Can I import a list of customers and the products they bought so I don’t loose all my shop’s history?
Thanks for the reply.
I don’t understand, though. I don’t want to allow users to upload files.
I just want older customers to be able to see and download the files they purchased BEFORE I started delivering my ebooks through WPDM. Can I assign the product to their account so that WPDM sees that client X can access file A without the client going through the purchase ?
Sent !
Thank you for your help, it’s much appreciated!
It doesn’t have to be done immediately, I can wait. But I would appreciate it if you could give me an estimated time of delivery. Thanks
Alright,
But how does this allow me to add a customer to a specific mailchimp group? WPDM only lets me put the customer in a list

Thank you so much ! It’s resolved
